New Issue of the Ceiba Scientific Journal

Zamorano presents the latest issue of its scientific journal Ceiba—Vol. 59, No. 1, 2026 Ceibawhich features articles addressing concrete challenges in Latin America from a variety of perspectives, ranging from the use of agricultural waste to biodiversity conservation and food security.

Melvin Rivera and collaborators evaluated the use of biochar made from corn cobs—an agricultural residue that is typically discarded—to improve the quality of Honduran soils, offering a low-cost alternative for producers. Jorge Cardona and collaborators developed a chocolate bar made with carrot peel flour, providing a way to create foods with a higher dietary fiber content while also reducing agro-industrial waste. Researchers Staina Valcin and Adriana Hernández documented Haiti’s nutritional situation, identifying findings that may help guide public policy decisions in one of the countries with the highest levels of food insecurity in the region.

The issue also includes a study by Oliver Komar and Andrea Garmendia on the most common bird species found on Zamorano’s campus, contributing to knowledge of local biodiversity. It also features research by Javier Ramón Sotomayor and collaborators on the behavior of laminated wood, with applications in the timber and forestry industries.

The issue additionally includes the proceedings of Zamorano’s Seventh Forum on Good Teaching Practices, held on September 26, 2025. During the forum, our faculty members shared successful teaching strategies aimed at strengthening the education of future agricultural professionals. Finally, in the editorial, Rector Emeritus Keith L. Andrews and co-authors reflect on the role of research and development (R&D) at Zamorano and the opportunities available to strengthen it.
