New Species Named in Honor of Zamorano University Professor
A team of researchers described a new spider species of the genus Ixchela, found in a cloud forest in the department of Olancho, Honduras. With this discovery, Honduras becomes the Central American country with the greatest known diversity of this spider genus.
The scientists decided to name the new species Ixchela komari in honor of Dr. Oliver Komar, professor at Zamorano University, in recognition of his outstanding scientific career and his commitment to the conservation of Honduran biodiversity, particularly through his work with the country’s birds and his role in strengthening the Zamorano Biodiversity Center. In addition, part of the scientific material from this and other spider studies was deposited in the center’s collection, located on the university campus.
Naming a species after a researcher is one way the scientific community recognizes significant contributions to the knowledge and protection of nature. This discovery also highlights the importance of university biological collections, such as Zamorano’s, for taxonomic research in the region.
