A total of 25 financial institutions from Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama will participate in the Regional Diploma in Microfinance for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Initiatives.
Tegucigalpa, May 15, 2025. With the goal of offering appropriate, efficient, and sustainable financial products for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) investing in environmental initiatives, the Green MSMEs II Initiative—led by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), the Government of Germany through KfW, and the European Union—in partnership with Zamorano Pan-American Agricultural School, has launched the Regional Diploma in Microfinance for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Initiatives.
This academic program will strengthen the technical capacities of financial institution staff across Central America, equipping them with specialized tools for analyzing, evaluating, and financing projects focused on renewable energy and energy efficiency. The goal is to promote sustainable solutions that drive the development of MSMEs throughout the region.
Â
The diploma is being launched at a critical time for the region, which faces an urgent need to advance the energy transition. In a context where fossil fuels remain the primary source of greenhouse gas emissions, the adoption of clean technologies is a strategic necessity for economic development. However, this transition requires not only innovation but also access to financing and institutional capacity. For this reason, the Green MSMEs II Initiative reaffirms its commitment to supporting MSMEs by helping the financial sector design products that are adequate, flexible, and aligned with their realities.

The program will run for 17 weeks in a hybrid format—16 weeks of virtual instruction and one in-person week at the Zamorano campus. Key topics include an introduction to renewable energy and energy efficiency, the regional energy market, financial analysis, socio-environmental risk management, and the development of business plans for renewable energy and energy efficiency projects.
