For decades, agricultural research programs have worked to develop improved varieties that are more resistant to pests, diseases, and climate change. However, ensuring that these varieties reach farmers does not automatically guarantee better harvests.

An international team of researchers, with participation from Zamorano, the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), and Guatemala’s Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology (ICTA), analyzed the extent to which farmers in Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Haiti have adopted improved bean varieties and whether this adoption has actually resulted in higher yields.

The results, published in the journal Agricultural Systems, reveal a surprising situation: in several countries, the use of improved seeds did not translate into better harvests, while in others, significant gains were achieved even with low adoption levels.

The study also found signs of genetic contamination within formal seed production systems, compromising the quality of the varieties distributed to farmers. These findings highlight that strengthening seed quality control—not only developing new varieties—is essential to ensure that agricultural research truly benefits producers. The research included the participation of Dr. Juan Carlos Rosas, professor emeritus at Zamorano University.

For more information:

jcrosas@zamorano.edu

         Read the study here

Beans are one of the most important foods in the diets of Central America and Haiti.
